What's Wrong With Your Feet, Son?

I have spent the last week of my life working furiously on a paper for class all about happiness. As a result, I am completely sick of typing the word, but I'm definitely not sick of thinking about it. It was truly fascinating to study the things that make us happy and why, although I must say that I know even less about the true meaning of happiness than I thought I did before I started the paper. In any case, typing the word so many times makes one begin to wonder: Am I happy?

Whatever happiness is, I think I can conclude that yes, I am. (This will also serve as a way to update those of you reading this whom I haven't seen in a while as to what is going on in my life lately!)

I have just started my freshman year at ACU. I love this school, and I love being here. I love learning, both inside the classroom and out. I like my job at an Italian restaurant (like, not love. I'm pretty sure I don't love waitressing.) I've made some amazing friends here, and I have some amazing friends spread all over the state and the country. I have a wonderful family waiting for me at home, and people who feel like family all over the world. I am so beyond blessed, it is entirely unfathomable.

Of course, there is so much more to happiness than just good things in life. I think, as a result of the ridiculous amount of research I've done on the subject this week, that I can conclude that happiness is less about the criteria and more about the heart, or the attitude. That may sound like common sense, but I think we often forget the power of a positive attitude. The thinking is somewhat circular ("I am happy because I choose to be") but potent nonetheless.

Even though I get tired, or sad, or wish with all my heart that I was in Kazembe, Zambia or Houston, Texas...I think I spend quite a lot of time being happy.

This post could definitely be a bit deeper, but I am slightly rushed and very tired. Plus, we just have to get the basics of where I am right now before we can start all the fun stuff. So for everyone I haven't seen recently - consider yourself updated.

P.S. Let me know if you get the reference in the title of this post!
